Ghoema & Glitter: New Year Carnival in Cape Town
Cape Town - Exhibition
05 September 10 - 31 January 11
Iziko Good Hope Gallery
Iziko Social History Collections department presents Ghoema and Glitter: New Year Carnival in Cape Town.
This exhibition opens at the Iziko Good Hope Gallery at the Castle of Good Hope, on 5 June 2010 and showcases a unique part of Cape Town and South Africa's history and culture - content that has never before been the subject of a museum exhibition.
The legacy of Cape Town's New Year Carnival is rooted in the history of slavery and the development of early working class communities in the City. It was later influenced, inter alia, by the visits of blackface minstrel entertainment groups from the USA. The Carnival's formal beginnings as a competition date back over a hundred years (1907).
'Tweede Nuwe Jaar' Carnival is a significant aspect of the social history of Cape Town and continues today to form part of the City's cultural landscape. Ghoema and Glitter: New Year Carnival in Cape Town reveals how Carnival participation has been passed on from generation to generation, while at the same tracing the changes to the Carnival over time. The exhibition details the histories and performances of the Nagtroepe (Malay Choirs); Christmas Bands and Klopse, who together make up what we understand as the 'Tweede Nuwe Jaar' celebrations.
The significance of Carnival as celebration, as well as the context of changing expressions of history and identity, is represented. A striking study of the conflation of social life, race and politics, identity, ritual, popular culture and negotiating the everyday in South Africa's past can all be found in the Carnival. The exhibition draws on Iziko Social History's new oral history and Carnival collections, which are included in the exhibition in the AV stations, texts and images, as well as displays of artifacts. Ghoema and Glitter: New Year Carnival in Cape Town provides a rare opportunity to showcase the creativity of a range of photographers, artists and film makers who have been inspired by the Carnival and made it a subject of their work
The narratives and memories of Carnival participants provide a major part of the content of the exhibition and this that must also be acknowledged as the exhibition's inspiration.
The exhibition can be seen daily from 09h30 - 16h00.

Liewe Heksie, the brainchild of Verna Vels, became a household name in 1963, with Vels reading the stories on the then Afrikaans radio service of the SABC. Today Liewe Heksie has become part of South Africa's national heritage with thousands of South Africans sharing in the memories of the country's favourite witch! Besides the radio broadcasts and books, the Liewe Heksie stories were published in various other forms including records, CDs, puppets and two television series.
Frans Swart of Lefra Productions directed the Liewe Heksie stage production and says; 'To me, this is a wonderful honour. I was a camera man on the Liewe Heksie show years ago, and that is why it is such a challenge for me to direct Heksie. I was privileged to work with Verna Vels and Louise Smit in those days, to produce Liewe Heksie for TV. Verna gave us wonderful characters, stories and dialogue to work with ... I am really looking forward to directing the stage version!'
